While it can be said that online marketing is a totally different animal from typical corporate marketing, there are similarities in theory that one must be aware of before starting a business or launching a marketing campaign.

At the start of every business, you should have a business plan. This will undoubtedly be different for different types of industries and companies. In some cases, you don't have as much planning to do, but in others you'll end up with a 200 page document.

Whether you may be starting an online business from the ground up or expanding your current business to create a website, there has to be a concrete plan involved. Perhaps you want to ask yourself what website you would like to create. The Internet marketing elite will definitely advise you that THE best website for your business would be a blog site. So for example, if you are running a company that sells electric guitars and other musical instruments, try writing a blog about guitar heroes like Hendrix or the story of how companies like Fender got their start. Don't dismiss the blog site as a repository for juvenile rants and raves - that's how it used to be, but now, it might be the best way to put some character into your website. As people leave comments on your blog site, you would be in effect receiving the feedback that your product needs.

Blogging is a great way to start an online business because not only can people leave comments and feedback, but you can write about other people and others can write about you. This is the basics of linkbuilding. And as more and more people talk about you and your business, you will find your website becoming more popular and more visible at the higher echelon of the search engine rankings.

It is a common, albeit cardinal mistake for online businesses to immediately put up advertising right from the start. This is fine once you're established, but is absolutely never okay when just starting out. In most cases, it takes at least a year (which is quite optimistic, in fact) for any online business to start making money. It will be worse for your company to try and force it than to try and make money right away. The use of advertisements often leads to more established online sources dismissing your site as "tacky" and/or "trying too hard."

Once you have everything running smoothly, you should start using social media marketing. Get friends to help rate your blog posts and you'll start to see a huge increase in traffic. Ideally, your site should be garnering about two thousand hits on a daily basis.
